Expected Average Computing Run Times:
Provide a general estimate of how long each continuous computing session will last. At present, the maximum job run time is 96 hours (4 days).
*
Brief description of the intended computing work to be performed on the Super Computer:
*
Will this project utilize GPUs? If so, how many could it utilize simultaneously?
(Note: we welcome your project even if your job is CPU-only.)
*
No GPUs (I will only use CPUs) 1 GPU 2 GPUs 3 GPUs 4 GPUs 5 GPUs 6 GPUs 7 GPUs 8 or more GPUs Unsure, but would guess at least one GPU Unsure, but would guess no GPUs
Could your project run on more than one computing node (computer server) simultaneously?
(Note: we currently have a single node with 8 GPUs and 128 CPUs, but we are optimistic about obtaining at least one additional node.)
*
No, single node only Yes, multi-node capable now Single node for now but multi-node in the future Not sure
The Super Computer has 14 terabytes (14000 gigabytes) of high-speed local storage for its workspace (that we call "$WORK"). This space is to be used for active work by the Super Computer.
It has 123 terabytes (123000 gigabytes) of network-mounted lower-speed storage (that we call "$SLOW"). This space is not intended as a permanent archive, but is available to store data that you do not need for active processing for up to 6 months.
For example, you might perform one experiment on $WORK and let the Super Computer analyze that dataset for 48 hours. After that processing run has completed, you would move that entire experiment and its results to $SLOW to make room for the next experiment.
Estimated total number of gigabytes for all data that need to be stored on the high-speed data storage area simultaneously :
(i.e., size of data that cannot be moved to slower storage during your processing)
*
If you know how many other computing resources (CPU cores, RAM, networking bandwidth, etc.) are to be utilized, please estimate:
The Super Computer has outbound Internet access (so you can download to it while logged in there), however, it cannot be logged into from outside of the UNMC network.
How will you be accessing the Super Computer?
*
From UNMC PCs on the internal UNMC network From off campus, using the Global Protect VPN to connect to the UNMC network From the VMware Horizon ("OneTap" app from appstore.unmc.edu) remote desktop app on my personal device into the UNMC network Other
Please elaborate on how you plan to access the Super Computer:
*
The Super Computer is only accessed by Secure Shell (SSH). Which SSH client will you be using most of the time?
(Note 1: the Microsoft Remote Desktop program cannot be used to login directly to the Super Computer, but it is possible to run an X Windows remote session with a graphical user interface over SSH.)
(Note 2: You can use Remote Desktop to login to a campus PC, and then run SSH to connect from that PC to the Super Computer.)
*
Built-in /usr/bin/ssh program on Linux Built-in ssh program on macOS from Terminal.app Built-in SSH.EXE program on Windows 10+ PuTTY on Windows MobaXterm on Windows WinSCP shell session on Windows SSH integration in vsCode or similar GUI from my PC Other SSH client program on Windows Other SSH client program
If you have an SSH public key you would like to use in lieu of logging in with a user account password, please paste all public keys you wish to use in here.
As this is a system where PHI data may be utilized, your private key must be unlocked with a non-empty passphrase. Do not paste your public key here if you generated your keypair with a blank passphrase.
Example format:
ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAADAQABAAAAgQDCLFYoF3eUNEgeWaljhtZhO1...luWoS6w== optional_description_here
If you don't have an SSH key yet, you can generate one yourself, for example, using GitHub's or Google's instructions. (For Google, ignore the "Before you begin" section which is not required.)
ssh PUBLIC key only
We use the SLURM scheduling software to manage your processing jobs. Are you familiar with SLURM and using its
srun and
sbatch commands to submit jobs?

Will you be using a Python workflow?
*
Yes
No
We expect all Python users to have their own tools to be installed in their individual user folders, rather than depending on the system's built-in Python.
Do you need us to install and initialize Anaconda for you that includes its default installation packages (Jupyter Notebook, etc.)?
(Note: once Anaconda is installed, you can start Jupyter Notebook from your SSH command-line login session but access it with your web browser from your campus PC)
*
Yes
No
Software programs, packages, plug-ins, and similar resources that you need installed system-wide, or "none" if you do not need any.
Please note that we generally require you to install all required tool chains in your $HOME or $WORK folders, but we will consider specific use-cases, especially if they benefit the user base as a whole.
A benefit of installing in your own folders is that you will have full control of what software and what versions are installed and used, so that you can document your build environment accurately in Materials & Methods sections of publications. If you use the system-wide tools, the tools and their versions may change without notice.
