Extending Direct Instruction to Students with ASD Using Speech Generating Devices
Thank you for your interest in this study. Below is a detailed description of the study procedures and eligibility
criteria:
The study is testing a curriculum called the Direct Instruction Language for Learning (DI-LL) that has previously been shown to improve language skills for all kinds of students, but it is unknown if it can help improve language skills for children with autism that use SGDs. That is what this study is looking at.
If you child is enrolled, they will be randomly assigned to a group that will either receive this DI-LL curriculum for 10 weeks or will continue their treatment as usual. Children in both groups will complete a language skills assessment at the beginning and end of the 10 weeks. Those who are receiving the curriculum will participate inĀ two sessions per week of 90 minutes for 10 weeks. You will also be asked some questions about your child's language ability and preferences.
If your child is in the "treatment-as-usual" group, you will have the option of participating in the DI-LL curriculum group after the first ten weeks is over. You will be compensated for your time.
This study is being conducted solely for research purposes and your participation is strictly voluntary. If you are interested in taking part, we will ask you to sign a form to indicate that you consent to taking part in the study. If you consent to participate, you may withdraw from the study at any time. You will receive compensation for participation.
Your child may be eligible if they are:
- 4 - 8 years of age.
- Confirmed diagnosis of ASD and are minimally verbal (using fewer than 5 spoken words).
- Currently using a speech generative device.
- Able to understand instructions given in English.
If you are interested in participating in this study and believe you meet the eligibility criteria, you will need to answer several short questions. These questions will take about 5 minutes to complete.
